For tight-fitting respirators, face fit matters alongside filter selection. Fit testing and the seal check performed each time a respirator is donned have different roles.
What does a fit test assess?
A fit test evaluates a particular tight-fitting respirator make, model and size on an individual wearer. Results do not automatically transfer to another model or size. Testing should be conducted by a competent person using the selected method.
Why perform a seal check as well?
A successful fit test does not prove correct donning on every later occasion. The wearer performs the manufacturer’s seal check each time. This check does not replace fit testing and does not determine filter service life.
Prepare for quantitative testing
Confirm supported respirators, the test protocol, adapters or probes, tubing and consumables. Systems comparing ambient and in-mask particle counts need suitable ambient particles and instrument checks. Verify precise requirements in the current instrument manual.
Keep traceable records
Record wearer, respirator make/model/size, method, protocol, date and result. Review facial hair, compatibility with other PPE and use conditions. A numerical fit factor is not a direct measurement of workplace contaminant concentration or filter efficiency.
