Noise Measurement and Evaluation of Personal Noise Exposure

Noise Measurement and Evaluation of Personal Noise Exposure – Noise and exposure

A single instantaneous dB reading in the workplace is not sufficient to describe an employee's daily noise exposure. In assessing personal exposure, level, duration, peak values, and time history must be evaluated together.

What do Leq, LEX,8h, and noise dose represent?

Leq is the equivalent continuous sound level over the measurement period. LEX,8h normalises daily exposure to an eight-hour reference period. Noise dose expresses total exposure as a percentage according to the selected criterion and exchange rate.

Why is Lpeak evaluated separately?

Lpeak indicates very short-duration peak sound pressure and is not the same parameter as Lmax. In impulsive events, even if the total daily dose appears low, the peak level may independently pose a risk.

The difference between a personal dosimeter and a sound level meter

A dosimeter is worn on the employee to log personal exposure throughout the shift. A sound level meter is used for area surveys, machinery characterisation, engineering control, and octave band analysis.

Fundamental noise values in Turkey

Under the Regulation on the Protection of Employees from Noise-Related Risks, the values for daily exposure are 80 dB(A) for the lower exposure action value, 85 dB(A) for the upper exposure action value, and 87 dB(A) for the exposure limit value. In practice, the current regulatory text and measurement standards must be taken as the basis.

What should be sought in the right measuring instrument?

In personal dosimeters, compliance with relevant standards, time history logging, A/C/Z frequency weightings, peak measurement, exchange rates, and reporting software are important. Acoustic calibration checks must be performed before and after measurement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a noise dosimeter measure?

Worn on the employee, it logs exposure over time; it can calculate dose, TWA/LEX,8h, Leq, and additional parameters depending on the model.

Are Leq and Lpeak the same thing?

No. Leq denotes the equivalent energy level over a specified duration, whilst Lpeak denotes the very short-duration maximum peak pressure.

What do the values 80, 85, and 87 dB(A) mean?

In Turkey, they represent the lower action value, upper action value, and exposure limit value, respectively, for daily exposure.

Is calibration required before measurement?

Performing a field check on the instrument with an acoustic calibrator before and after measurement is good practice and an expected step in many standard methods.
