TSI Casella CEL-246 Class 2 sound level meter

Professional Sound Level Meter with IEC 61672-1 Class 2 Compliance, Leq/Lavg, and Data Logging

The CEL-246 is a compact Class 2 sound level meter developed for general workplace noise measurements, walk-through field surveys, product noise, and alarm checks. In addition to instantaneous and maximum sound pressure levels, it measures Leq or Lavg average values; with a graphical time history and internal data logging, it facilitates the assessment of fluctuating noise.

Product Specifications
  • IEC 61672-1 Class 2: compliance with IEC 61672-1:2002 Class 2, IEC 60651 Type 2, and ANSI S1.4 Type 2A is specified in manufacturer technical documentation; integrating average functions are further covered under IEC 60804 Type 2 and ANSI S1.43 Type 2.

  • Leq / Lavg average measurement: Energy equivalent Leq (Q=3) can be selected for European-based applications, and Lavg (Q=5) for US-based applications.

  • 30–130 dB measurement: Selectable 30–100 dB and 60–130 dB ranges; A and C frequency weightings with Fast, Slow, and Impulse time weightings.

  • Time history and logging: The CEL-246 logs up to 419,000 data points with a selectable 1–10 second logging interval; 100 separate runs can be stored, and CSV data can be downloaded to a PC.

  • Field calibration: Automatically senses the 1 kHz, 94 or 114 dB signal of a CEL-120/1 or Class 2 CEL-120/2 acoustic calibrator. The manufacturer recommends acoustic calibration verification before and after measurement.

  • Practical field use: high-resolution graphic display, two softkeys, approx. 35 hours battery life, USB connectivity, and a compact 245 g body.

    Technical Table 2
Class 2 Instrument StandardIEC 61672-1:2002 Class 2; also IEC 60651 Type 2 and ANSI S1.4 Type 2A. The average/integrating functions of the CEL-246 are covered under IEC 60804 Type 2 and ANSI S1.43 Type 2.
Workplace Noise MeasurementThe CEL-246 can be used for LAeq-based measurements in workplace area surveys, determining noise levels around tasks or sources, and general occupational hygiene noise assessments. When determining personal daily exposure, a shoulder-worn personal dosimeter may be required depending on the measurement strategy.
Leq and Peak MethodologyThe CEL-246 measures Leq/Lavg, instantaneous, and maximum levels. It features A and C frequency weightings. Because Z weighting is not specified in the instrument's technical documentation, no Z or LCpeak measurement capability is claimed on this page.
Field CalibrationThe manufacturer recommends acoustic calibration before and after measurement using a CEL-120/2 or CEL-120/1. The instrument automatically senses the calibrator signal at 94 or 114 dB at 1 kHz.
Raw Data and TraceabilityThe CEL-246 can store 419,000 data points and 100 runs in internal memory. With a selectable logging interval of 1–10 seconds, time-history data can be exported to a PC in CSV format.
Implementation in TurkeyIn occupational hygiene measurements, instrument class alone is not sufficient; measurement strategy, valid calibration of the instrument, pre/post-field verification, measurement positioning, and reporting must be implemented together in accordance with applicable legislation, TS EN ISO 9612, and authorised laboratory procedures.

    Measurement and Standards Approach

The CEL-246 is a professional measurement instrument meeting the requirements of an IEC 61672-1:2002 Class 2 sound level meter. IEC 61672-1 defines the electroacoustic performance class of the instrument; TS EN ISO 9612 is the measurement strategy and calculation method for determining workers' noise exposure. Therefore, rather than an "ISO 9612 certified instrument", an application-appropriate Class 2 measuring instrument and correct field methodology should be evaluated together.
