New Cosmos SDM-72 and SDM-73 iron wear debris monitors for grease and oil

New Cosmos SDM-72 / SDM-73 – Ferrous Wear Particle Analysers for Grease and Oil

Detect wear before it escalates in industrial robots, reduction gears, bearings, and gearboxes. New Cosmos SDM-72 for grease and SDM-73 for oil samples quickly measure ferromagnetic wear particles on site, helping you base maintenance decisions on data.

Operation and technical details

SDM-72 (grease): Steel/ferrous wear debris in grease samples from bearings and gears; 0–5.00 %Wt measuring range, 0.001 %Wt resolution, and approximately 0.8 mL sample.

SDM-73 (oil): Wear debris in oil samples from reduction gears, motors, and rotating machinery; 0–19,999 Wt ppm measuring range, 1 Wt ppm resolution, and 1.5 mL sample.

Measurement method: Electromagnetic induction based on magnetic balance. The sample is placed into the instrument; results are read quickly on site. The target to monitor is not a definitive fault diagnosis from a single measurement, but the wear trend on the same machine.

Applications: Robot arm gearboxes, industrial reduction gears, rolling bearings, conveyor systems, pumps, motors, and other rotating equipment. It is a method that supports vibration analysis, especially in low-speed applications.

Important limitation: The instruments do not perform comprehensive analysis regarding the chemical condition of the oil or the entirety of non-ferromagnetic metallic contamination; they do not establish maintenance threshold values on their own.

Application Selection Guide

SDM-72 or SDM-73? How to select the right instrument?

For industrial bearings, robot joints, or gear units where grease is used, SDM-72; for oil-circulated reduction gears, pumps, motors, and gearboxes, SDM-73 is evaluated. Although the measurement method is similar, the sample accessory, measurement unit, and range differ.

What advantage does it provide in low-speed robots and reduction gears?

A distinct change in vibration data may not always be visible immediately after wear initiates. Regular monitoring of ferrous particles in grease or oil samples provides supplementary early-warning data in robotic assembly lines, conveyor systems, and reduction gears operating at varied speeds.

How should sampling and measurement data be evaluated?

Collect samples from the same equipment and under similar operating conditions using clean sampling tools. Rather than deciding on a definitive fault from a single value, monitor the trend; evaluate results alongside maintenance records, vibration, thermal observation, and, where necessary, laboratory oil analysis.

NOVEL approach in robotics automation and predictive maintenance

Checking wear trends with a small lubricant sample without stopping production lines or performing extensive disassembly can save time for maintenance teams. NOVEL provides technical consultancy to determine the right SDM model and consumable accessories according to application conditions.
