Gas Detection, Alarm and Control Panels

When a gas leak is detected, seconds matter. The right alarm panel makes sensor data visible, alerts personnel during alarm conditions, and manages ventilation, sirens, gas shut-off valves, or plant automation routines tailored to site-specific scenarios. The NOVEL portfolio features CETCI FCS, New Cosmos V3/VAS, ePACT, PLC-based systems, and the NV-120Mx, offering solutions that scale from single-point to multi-point architectures.

Whether for an organised industrial zone natural gas infrastructure, industrial manufacturing, chemical processing, semiconductor fabrication, or a centralised gas monitoring installation, detector–panel pairing, signal type, alarm thresholds, relay matrices, and certifications must be evaluated collectively.

New Cosmos V3 / VAS – Modular Gas Alarm Indicator and Panel-Mount Control Unit

V3 indicator modules, selectable for various gas detector types, form panel-mount gas detection systems featuring a 3-colour LED bargraph, two-stage alarms, and the VAS alarm unit.

Operation and technical details

The V3 range includes Hv, Hi, Cv, Ci, Tv, Ti, D, O, and M indicator variants. The sensor operating principle and target gas must be matched correctly. With a 3-colour 50-segment LED display, 24 V DC power supply, 4–20 mA output on selected models, and a maintenance mode, it is well suited for conventional centralised gas detection installations.

Compatibility with newer detectors: The manufacturer's compatibility matrix lists the V3-M model alongside 4–20 mA class detectors including the KD-12, PD-12, KS-7, and PS-7. Do not treat other V3 models as direct drop-in replacements for KD-12/PD-12. CE status should not be generalised across every V3 order code; the manufacturer's manual specifically cites the V-SC-4B + V3-M combination as the CE reference. Review the manufacturer's V3 technical datasheet.

New Cosmos ePACT gas alarm control panel enclosure with TFT touchscreen

New Cosmos ePACT – Modular Gas Detection Control Panel with TFT Display

Providing digital visualisation and an expandable I/O architecture, the ePACT unifies multi-channel gas detector alarm handling, trend monitoring, and remote oversight onto a single platform.

Operation and technical details

Standard Compact 8 / Compact 16 configurations provide 8 or 16 4–20 mA analogue inputs respectively; the input/output topology can be expanded according to project scale. A 10.1-inch TFT display option, real-time monitoring, Ethernet-based configuration, and event/trend logging via SIMS-NX can be implemented. All interfaces, plug-in modules, and redundancy levels are specified per the technical project specification during quotation.

An appropriate control architecture must be specified for field detector alarm matrices, fan/valve/sounder actuation, and process shutdown routines. The 8/16 channel figure does not represent a strict upper limit for all possible ePACT configurations.

New Cosmos PLC-based industrial gas alarm system enclosures and PLC modules

New Cosmos PLC-Based – Project-Specific Centralised Gas Alarm and Safety Control Panels

Modular PLC gas alarm automation for multi-zone facilities, semiconductor fabs, chemical plants, and energy installations; featuring digital fieldbus communications, relay matrices, event logs, and centralised visualisation.

Operation and technical details

New Cosmos PLC-based solutions are documented in manufacturer project deployments featuring Siemens S7-class control architectures, diverse fieldbus interfaces, analogue/digital inputs, relay outputs, and SIMS-NX visualisation. Actual system scale, network topology, safety functions, and the specific PLC hardware are engineered on a project-by-project basis.

Specifying an alarm panel solely by its display count is insufficient: alarm trip matrices, fail-safe behaviour on detector fault, power supply redundancy, maintenance accessibility, system logging, mechanical enclosure placement, and plant automation interfacing all require rigorous engineering appraisal.

Control Panel Selection and Project Integration Guide

From single-point to centralised plant systems: selecting a control panel

1 detector: NV-120Mx; modular analogue/panel mount: V3/VAS; multi-channel with visualisation: ePACT; large facilities and bespoke alarm automation: PLC-based panel. CETCI FCS can be specified with compatible CETCI detectors for zonal gas/ventilation management. Selection must not be based solely on channel count.

Panel integration and modernisation with KD-12 / PD-12

KD-12 and PD-12 output an analogue gas concentration signal on suitable variants. When engineering installations with 4–20 mA input indicators such as the NV-120Mx and V3-M, cabling, power supplies, fault signalling currents, relay contact outputs, and gas measurement ranges must be matched. When retrofitting legacy NV-100 panels, direct pin-to-pin compatibility must not be assumed automatically.

Integration across organised industrial zones, natural gas, petrochemical, and semiconductor facilities

In organised industrial zone natural gas lines, process gas bottling plants, chemical manufacturing, semiconductor fabrication, and industrial refrigeration facilities, the interaction of the panel with zone-based alarms, sounders/beacons, ventilation fans, and process safety shutdowns must be defined in advance. For critical safety systems, adherence to applicable standards and independent engineering validation are essential.

Maintenance, calibration, event logging, and NOVEL support

Periodic detector calibration, input loop testing, contact/relay scenario verification, fail-safe behavior under fault conditions, uninterruptible power supply, and event log auditing must be addressed holistically. NOVEL provides engineering support to determine optimal detector–panel combinations and define commissioning/servicing requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions about Gas Alarm Control Panels

What is the function of a gas alarm control panel?

It aggregates measurement and alarm signals from fixed gas detectors and commands sirens, beacons, ventilation systems, valves, or plant automation based on programmed logic. The panel itself is not a gas sensor; detector heads, control panels, and alarm response matrices are engineered as an integrated system.

What is the difference between the single-point NV-120, the V3, and the multi-channel ePACT?

The NV-120Mx is a compact solution designed for monitoring a single 4–20 mA sensor point. V3/VAS modules can be deployed across multiple distinct sensor families in panel-mount configurations. The ePACT incorporates versatile I/O modules to establish multi-channel, centralised, and expandable monitoring systems.

Is the New Cosmos NV-120Mx compatible with KD-12 and PD-12?

Yes. The connectable detector table in the manufacturer's NV-120Mx brochure specifies the KD-12 and PD-12. Other sub-models within the NV-120 series use different sensor types and connection schemes; order codes must be verified.

Is the NV-120Mx identical to other models in the NV-120 family?

No. The NV-120Mx is dedicated to 4–20 mA inputs, whereas C, H, D, and O/S variants are designed for different gas types or sensor signals. The technical specification, gas type, power supply, and certification of each device must be appraised independently.

What is the difference between V3-M and V3-Ti?

The V3-M is listed for detectors providing a suitable 4–20 mA analogue output, such as the KD-12/PD-12. The V3-Ti is designed for different detector types and measurement principles. They must not be assumed to be equivalent or to carry identical CE configurations.

What do ePACT Compact 8 and Compact 16 denote?

In the manufacturer's brochure, standard Compact 8 and Compact 16 baseline configurations provide eight and sixteen 4–20 mA analogue inputs, respectively. The system can be expanded to accommodate additional relays, digital inputs, industrial communication interfaces, and power redundancy as required by the project.

When should a PLC-based gas alarm panel be specified?

A PLC-based architecture should be considered for large-scale facilities requiring extensive detector counts, complex alarm cause-and-effect matrices, and deep plant automation interfacing. Field communications, fail-safe architecture, alarm relays, and centralised data logging/monitoring requirements are engineered to site specifications.

How are ATEX and CE requirements assessed for gas control panels?

ATEX or CE compliance is verified against the specific equipment model, supply voltage, and installation assembly, rather than generalised across a brand. It is common engineering practice to locate detector heads within the hazardous area while housing the control panel in a non-hazardous (safe) area; hazardous area classification must be carried out independently.

Can CETCI FCS, cGAS/LPT, and New Cosmos panels always be interconnected?

No. The mere availability of 4–20 mA, Modbus, or another interface does not guarantee complete interoperability. Detector and panel signal spans, channel addressing, fault threshold signalling, calibration procedures, and alarm cause-and-effect logic must be verified using the respective manufacturer documentation.
